Growing up in Canada, with a prestige musical family, Mac Demarco started playing music as a mock R&B band that sung about classmates of the opposite gender during his teen years in high school. He made a name for himself when he started taking his music seriously under the name Makeout Videotape with bandmate and friend Alex Calder.

Born Vernor Winfield Macbriare Smith IV, after his father and his father before him, then his mother changed his name due to his father leaving the household to Macbriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco. It wasn't until he was 14 years old when he caved in and learned to play the guitar so he could 'pick up chicks.'

His first musical project The Sound of Love, what first started out as a Matrix themed German rock band spun into an R&B collaboration. It was formed with his high school friend Ryan who played piano and was one of the main reasons why they turned in a more soul than rock direction. It consisted of him on piano and Demarco on vocals and the songs were of a satirical nature, most of them being about rumours or inside jokes about the girls around their school. Wanting to start afresh, Mac moved to Montreal and got a number of awful jobs, he once gave his body up for medical experiments at the local university, worked as a day labourer on the roads and he worked at McDonald's for a week before handing in his uniform through the drive-thru window. He did have fun as a music teacher, although the kids were the same age as him.

Going back to his satirical roots on his solo debut, Rock and Roll Nightclub, Demarco was sick with tonsillitis creating a low, deep Elvis sounding voice. Download google chrome for mac app store. The songs were mainly a parody of the rock and roll culture; Levi's jeans, leather jackets and motorcycles. The six song EP gained him a widespread audience and caught the attention of New York record label Captured Tracks, Demarco then reached out to some of his old friends to join the band and tour with him.

Work began on his album shortly after being signed, he wrote and recorded all of his songs by himself as he had done so with the EP. His first album, titled 2, was mainly about his family and friends. Cooking Up Something Good is a prime example of this. The song Freaking Out the Neighborhood, is an apology to his mother about the antics that he got up to when he was away on tour. Sherrill is dedicated to his grandmother and the last track on the album is a re-recording of a Makeout Videotape song originally called Together, now dubbed Still Together. The song is dedicated to his long-term girlfriend Kiera and is played at the end of every live set.

After a year and a half of relentless touring, Mac Demarco returned to the studio for his second full length album Salad Days and he decided to take in a more introspective outlook for the album, with songs detailing his life currently and giving himself advice in the process. Upon release the album was met with high praise from fans old and new making Mac Demarco a household name.

Alex Calder – ‘Strange Dreams'

Alex Calder used to be in a band with Mac DeMarco, and since we last blogged about him back in early 2013 he's been really strange on his social media networks. Highlights include a 'make-up tutorial', numerous claims that he's quitting music for acting, and plenty of photos like these:

He's not really to be taken seriously though. Like his mate Mac, he's a joker, and I find him really funny. His music is the right side of weird to strike a chord as well – and tracks like ‘Strange Dreams' are a good mix of his former bandmate's sound with the likes of Ariel Pink. He's got an album coming out in January on Captured Tracks. You can expect it to be odd.
